Monterey’s wind and grey skies do

not deter Integrated Studies Special

Major (ISSM) senior Kenny Allison

when it comes to disc golfing.

Allison finds time to tend to

his duties as the president of the

CSU Monterey Bay (CSUMB)

disc golf club and the co-captain of

the CSUMB disc golf team. Allison

started throwing a frisbee [disc]

his junior year at CSUMB and

said, “after the first throw, I was

hooked on disc golf.” Shortly after

that fateful first throw, Allison was

addicted to disc golf and quickly

made the CSUMB disc golf club a

second home base.

When Allison joined the disc

club, it was lacking in leadership

and disc golfers were showing up

to leaderless club meetings.

“Kenny is a great player, he has

a great sense of camaraderie and he

is always willing to help out other

disc golfers,” said Josh Goldsmith, a

CSUMB Liberal Studies senior and

avid disc golf team and club member.

An election was held and a

unanimous vote put Allison in the

presidential seat. The vote and

support of the members, “meant a lot

to me that all those guys thought I’d

be the best president,” said Allison.

Soon after the election, Allison

and the other disc golf club

members formed the first CSUMB

Otter disc golf team in 2005, and

Allison took the trophy in the first

Student Otter Open in the spring

of 2006.

“I give a lot of credit to Scott

Keasey for getting us the courses,

[and] the baskets from the Disc

Golf Association; he really did a lot

for us,” said Allison.

According to Allison, Scott

Keasey was the person who started

the CSUMB disc golf movement

and Allison has picked up where

Keasey left off.

“Ever since Kenny became

president, the disc golf club and

team have just been moving

forward,” said Nick Maffei, a two

and half year disc golf team veteran

and junior Business major. Keeping

the momentum going, CSUMB has

sponsored the West Coast College

Open two years running and the

Otter team has won the Stancil

Johnson cup two years in a row.

“CSUMB is the only school

west of Mississippi to host intercollegiate

play,” said Allison.

Facing off against formidable

opponents such as UC Santa Cruz

and Santa Clara University, the

Otter disc golf team is CSUMB’s

only undefeated team. The future

of CSUMB disc golf lies with the

new incoming students.

“I was a catalyst to start new and

great things, but we need people

that can keep it going” Allison

continued, “I hope that CSUMB

will become the epicenter for

college disc golf.”
