Augie Johnston, a CSU Monterey Bay junior and business major, has been named the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 28 to Feb. 3.

According to Alex Hudson, a junior Kinesiology major and the CSUMB men’s basketball assistant coach, “Augie is a captain, a leader, and gets everybody together,” said Hudson. “He is everything you want the captain of your basketball team to be. He's the leading scorer, has the highest field goal percentage, and takes smart shots.”

Johnston, a 6-foot-3-inch guard from Atascadero, California, can be lethal when in range. He has averaged 16.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per game since the beginning of the 2007 and 2008 basketball season. When interviewed about his recent CCAA award, Johnston stated, “It feels good, it’s nice to be recognized. I think the two wins that we had gave us confidence.” Johnston also voiced that, “Joe Mitchell should be the next player of the week because he can do it on both ends of the floor, offense and defense.”  Hudson indicated the next player of the week, “could be anybody. This time it’s very unselfish and everyone’s playing well.”

The Otter Men’s Basketball team has played extremely well this season and their 79-67 victory over CSU Chico on Saturday has allowed them to continue an amazing six game winning streak. Johnson scored 10 points and had 2 rebounds in this game, which helped the Otter’s in their win over Chico State. This latest victory has placed the Otter’s 7-7 in the CCAA. The top eight teams in the CCAA will go to the postseason tournament and right now the Otters are in seventh place.

With Johnston’s leadership skills and his ability to get the team to play well together, the Otter’s may be able to fill one of the eight spots for the CCAA conference championship. For up-to-date CCAA athletic information, visit www.goccaa.org or www.otterathletics.com.
