For those not taking summer classes, the

next three months will provide many

with the opportunity to work for some

money and enjoy a break from school.

CSU Monterey Bay (CSUMB)

offers student jobs all summer long,

some of which include free housing.

On-campus positions are being filled

for Residential Advising, Conferences

and Events, Alumni Center, as well as

many more. For information on how

to apply for an on-campus job visit the

Career Development Center, Building

44, or career.csumb.edu.

Brandin Toliver, Psychology

sophomore has been a Residential Advisor

at CSUMB for three and a half semesters.

He recently applied for a Conferences

and Events summer position.

“[The job] will give me housing

and employment,” said Toliver. “All

my plans for this summer are set.”

Eager employees are needed

throughout the Monterey area to fill

summer positions as well.

Many golf courses in the area are

hiring students to caddy or manage

the greens during the summer months.

Caddying may be hard work but the

local courses are known to pay well.

Kinesiology freshman, Ben Stone

has a summer job with the courses

Bayonet and Black Horse just down

the street from CSUMB.

“It’s a good reliable job,” said Stone,

“and sometimes I get good tips.”

The City of Monterey also has

several jobs available, including a

lifeguard position and a recycling

technician internship. The city is also

looking for talented individuals who

are interested in teaching one or two

day workshops over summer.

A good place to find work in the

area is montereybayjobs.com. This

website offers a matchmaking system

for job seekers and employers in

Monterey County, making it a great

tool for students seeking work.

Between that summer job and

backyard BBQs, it may be tough to find

a way to kill all the free time. Fortunately,

the Monterey Bay area offers a plethora

of activities for its residents to enjoy

during the summer months.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium will be

showcasing exhibits with exotic new

animals, sailing and scuba adventures,

and will feature a new behind-thescenes

tour. The Aquarium will

also be open for extended weekend

hours over the summer, and offer

the convenience of purchasing tickets

online to avoid those pesky lines.

All summer long students can hop

on a pair of skates or blades and enjoy

the floors of Del Monte Skating Arena.

The arena is open for public skate

sessions Thursday through Sunday

and offers booking for private parties

Monday through Wednesday.

Sanctuary Rock Climbing Gym in

Sand City is another attraction for the

summer student. Manager at the Rock

Gym, Charles Schrammel said, “We

offer membership and day-passes with

discounts for students, teachers and

military as well as extended summer

hours.” The gym also offers rental

equipment for new climbers or those

who do not have their own gear.

Whether ones summer will be

a time for work or relaxation, the

Monterey area is sure to provide many

opportunities for both.
