On May 30, Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB) will no longer have a 24-hour ATM machine available on Campus. For years, a 24-hour ATM operated by Central Coast Federal Credit Union has been available for students on the west side of the Otter Express, but starting May 30, the machine will no longer be available. The machine is notorious for being out-of-order, and is vandalized somewhat regularly. A new ATM machine, operated by Central Coast Federal Credit Union has been placed near the entrance of the Student Center. The Student Center however, has limited hours, and may not be able to meet students’ need for access to cash at all hours.
This change is another turn in the wrong direction for CSUMB. The campus is already secluded from the rest of the community on the former Fort Ord, and this change is just another reason students will have to leave campus for services that should be available on campus.
The new machine is brand new, and has been functioning properly since its introduction. Because of its location near the service desk in the Student Center, it will likely never be vandalized like the other was. If the campus were to have a Student Union or other building with 24-hour services, as a university like ours deserves, an ATM there would likely be safe from vandalism, and would provide students with the access to cash they need.
