A Vaginal Affirmation

World Theater

This time of year, it is as traditional as Valentine cards, roses and chocolate, the “Vagina Monologues,” performances have become an annual Valentine’s Day celebration. The play presented by the Emergency Management Professional Organization for Women’s Enrichment (EMPOWER), as part of a nationwide campaign to stop violence against women throughout the world.

The “Vagina Monologues” has become the longest student run production at CSU Monterey Bay (CSUMB) and will be performed at the World Theater, on Feb. 4, 5 and 6 at 8:00 p.m.

The inspiration for Eve Ensler play came from interviews with over 200 women who revealed their memories and testimonials about their sexual experiences. The play, now translated into 24 languages, is a means to educate and empower women who think they have no voice.

“I wanted to become part of this event because I saw last year’s performance and it was an inspirational, life changing experience for me, it made me proud of my sexuality,” said Liz Sanchez, actress and sophomore Psychology major.

Director, Renee Infelis, who is part of the CSUMB community, is responsible for bringing the first presentation of the “Vagina Monologues in 2001.

“The CSUMB production of the “Vagina Monologues,” is different from other performances because it is a full theatrical production rather than the simple set that the Monologues are usually performed,” said Infelise. “Our main goal is to make people aware that one in three women has experienced some type of sexual abuse and violence during her lifetime.”

The proceeds for the production will benefit the Monterey Rape Crisis Center and the Triangle Speakers. For additional information: triangle@trianglespeakers.org; 24 hour crisis hotline, Monterey 831-375-4357; Salinas 831-424-4357.
