At times golf can be considered an individual sport. But not for this Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB) golf team. Through the leadership of the older players this team has come together with great fashion. With this cohesion the team has not finished outside of the top five the entire year. Along with all their other accomplishment this year’s team has been ranked fourth in the nation.

“Get down and give me 15! Keep your butt down! Don’t stop running! Are you giving up?” As if running uphill in sand and getting drenched in mud was not enough, Drill Sergeants shouted words of motivation throughout the 5.6 mile run through Fort Ord. Some were encouraging and others were demanding, but it aligned well with the rest of the Big Sur Mud Run.

1. What should the top priorities of a college athlete be? The top priorities of a student- athlete should be just that: studies and athletics. Of course family and friends are important, but all student-athletes make a commitment to the school and their team. Being a great student-athlete is all about time management and knowing how to balance school and sports.

It was the ninth inning of the World Baseball Classic and Canada was leading over Mexico. Mexico’s pitcher Arnold Leon threw the first two pitches and missed. On the third pitch, the batter, Rene Tosoni from Canada was hit with the ball. The hit led to a confrontation between the batter and pitcher and ultimately led to both teams huddling and, well, just going at it.

Cal State Monterey Bay’s Men’s Golf team begins their spring season, snagging second place at the Cal State San Bernardino Coyote Classic on Feb. 25 and earning a fifth place spot at the St. Edward’s Invitational in Austin, TX on March 4.

Water sports are typically for summer fun. However, these colligate athletes are in the water almost year round. From four to five hours of practice four times a week, members of the Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB) sailing club are windblown, cold and tired. However, just as any sport, they are enthused to be a part of this unique sport.

Since the start of Spring Semester, discussion has surrounded the addition of a large amount of speed bumps to the Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB) campus. They may be “annoying” to some students and faculty, but the bumps shed light on a transportation alternative to, literally, get around the bumps: bicycling.

 The game on Tuesday night, February 5 featured the CSUMB women’s basketball otters against the Cal State East Bay Pioneers. The game had close points, Otters leading at first, but tied the game when Brianna Terrance, from Cal State East Bay made a free throw.

Cal Sate Monterey Bay (CSUMB) is excited to unveil its new recreation field, which recently went under construction this past September. With intramural sports growing in popularity amongst CSUMB students, the new recreation field will provide a designated and more appropriate area for intramural sports to be played.

“1917 Otters”, a new spirit group, has dedicated their efforts to bringing a new culture of support for Otter soccer and rugby to Cal State Monterey Bay [CSUMB]. CSUMB Students attend men's and women's soccer teams frequently, as well as rugby throughout their seasons, but one faculty member intends to boost those numbers with the help of the 1917 Otters.

The CSUMB Men’s Rugby has begun gearing up for another season by practicing on the east side of campus. After a successful first season in the USA Rugby Conference, which saw the team finish with a respectable 2 and 4 record, the team is poised to improve on those numbers and then some.

The Otter Classic was a great marker for the women’s volleyball team to see how much all of their in the offseason has paid off, and where they need to improve as a team. The two day Classic consisted of our home team Otters, Academy of Art, Alaska-Anchorage, Dominican, Marysville University, Minnesota State Mankato, and San Francisco State.

Summer is winding down, and fall is approaching, but your Lady Otters Soccer team is just starting to heat up.  The ladies are off to a hot start this season, knocking off two of their first three opponents.  This coming on the heels of a disappointing 2011 campaign, that saw the women manage just one goal on their home field, in route to a 3-14 record.

There’s even more reason to be excited to be a Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB) Softball fan than ever. If you haven’t jumped on the bandwagon yet, you better soon. It might just leave without you. Coming off an incredible sweep of UC San Diego in La Jolla and a second place finish in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) tournament, not to mention a regular season co-championship with Cal State Dominquez Hills (CSUDH), the Otters have earned themselves the right to host the first ever NCAA regional in CSUMB Athletics history.

Crowds left over from the Masters, one of golf’s most prestigious tournaments, stayed in Augusta, Georgia, to witness a different take on the traditional sport. The National Collegiate Disc Golf Championship hosted a slew of Universities from all over the country including Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB).
