Despite a slow start from being seventh place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, CSU Monterey Bay(CSUMB) Otters, were able to achieve a victory over the San Francisco State University(SFSU) gators 87-75 at the Kelp Bed on Feb 27.

Like Point Guard of the Lady Otters Alma Lopez, a Liberal Studies senior, DShon Cannon, a Teledramatic Arts and Technology senior came out with a unique hairstyle. While Lopez had a corn rowed Mohawk, Cannon chose to mix it up and the Mohawk consisted of his normal hair.

"I did it because it's my senior weekend, and I did it for the crowd," said Cannon after the game. "I have to get it braided, I don't think my dad wants to see me with a Mohawk."

Despite the hair the Otters were not able to produce points early in the game, down 14-2 to the gators. The Otters tried to employ a zone defense, part of the reason that they were not able to prevent SFSU from scoring as CSUMB plays mostly man to man during the game.

The game did not continue well the entire first half, though the Otters were able to get back into the game to a small degree though were down 34-28 at the half.

It was in the second half that the Otters were able to bring their A game, pulling within one point with 10 minutes left in the game. Less then a minute later the Otters were able to take the lead and keep it for the rest of the game. Cannon dropped a series of three point shots on the gators, leading all scorers with 23 points.

The supporting cast of the Otters helped out their point guard, and at the end of the game the Otters won 82-75.

"We stuck to the game plan and were lucky to get easy shots," said Augie Johnston, a guard and Business junior who had eight points in the game. "This win is huge because we need a good seed for the playoffs."
